When it comes to the costs of car repair, you want to make sure that the mechanic you have knows what he is doing and can get the job done right the first time. There have been a few news exposes that have showed that some mechanics either don’t make any repairs, or look at your car to begin with, but still charge you out the wazoo to get your car fixed. So, when it comes to finding a mechanic you can trust, there are some things you will want to think about.
You will want to look for the services that they provide. Just because you will be going in for one particular problem this time, you will want someone who can handle just about any problem you may have in the future. Also check out what types of services the mechanic provides so you know if all of your needs are being met or not. If they refuse to state what their services are, then something shady may be going on. A mechanic who doesn’t tell you what services he can and can’t do may be a sign that he may take you for a ride later on.
Of course, be sure to think about certifications. Make sure that the person or garage you are looking at taking your vehicle too is in fact certified to perform the services you need. If you are looking to get your car’s state inspection done, but they are not qualified to do so, then you will need to find someone else to perform this service. Certification also gives you piece of mind that they know how to fix your vehicle properly and they are well educated about different parts. Look for an ASE certification if possible. The highest possible certification out there is a Master ASE Technician, so if your mechanic has this then you should be set.
Take a look at the garage or shop. You should be able to look around and do your own inspection of their facilities. Check to make sure that their car lifts seem to be in working order and if their shop is relatively clean and tidy. If it seems disorderly, then you may be looking at poor service and poor repairs.
Do your research. See what other people say about the shop or mechanic. If they were referred to you by a friend, you should hope that the business is on the up and up, but if you are just looking around on your own, you will want to read customer reviews. Find out how long they have been in business too. Some auto or body shops are backed by the Better Business Bureau, BBB, which means they are a legitimate business and have gotten good reviews. The BBB can also tell you if there have been complaints that have been filed against them.
Another thing that may not occur to some people is that they should be able to get prices and estimates for any work that should be done. Most garages have a list of services available along with prices, but if additional parts or services are needed, you should be able to ask how much money you will be looking at. If they don’t or won’t offer you an estimate, you may want to take your business elsewhere. A lot of places will give you an estimate and work with you as far as when and what services you want. They also may take into consideration what auto insurance you have and if that company offers any discounts or covers any repairs.
